Algorithms for large directed CARP instances: urban solid waste collection operational support
نویسنده
چکیده
Solid waste collection in urban areas is a central topic for local environmental agencies. The operational problem, the definition of collection routes given the vehicle fleet, can greatly benefit of computerized support already for medium sized town. While the operational constraints can greatly vary, the core problem can be identified as a capacitated arc routing problem on large directed graphs (DCARP). This paper reports about the effectiveness of different metaheuristics on large DCARP instances derived from real-world applications. . Solving a robust capacitated arc routing problem using a hybrid simulated annealing algorithm: A waste collection application
The urban waste collection is one of the major municipal activities that involves large expenditures and difficult operational problems. Also, waste collection and disposal have high expenses such as investment cost (i.e. vehicles fleet) and high operational cost (i.e. fuel, maintenance). In fact, making slight improvements in this issue lead to a huge saving in municipal consumption. Some inci...
متن کاملEvolutionary Algorithms for Multiperiod Arc Routing Problems
The Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (CARP) is useful for modeling urban waste collection or winter gritting, at the operational decision level. Many applications require a tactical version, the periodic CARP (PCARP), in which the trips are planned over a multiperiod horizon, subject to frequency constraints. The paper presents this new and hard theoretical problem, its variants, and a powerful ...
متن کاملCoupling Multiagent Simulation and GIS – an Application in Waste Management
Urban solid waste management is one of the most demanding issues of today’s urban areas, requiring large investments for efficient daily collection. Decision makers in the field face many complex decisions varying from solid waste collection to strategy development for the entire urban solid waste management process. Although several researchers have proposed algorithmic solutions and optimizat...
متن کاملEffective location models for sorting recyclables in public management
The recycling of urban solid wastes is a critical point for the ‘‘closing supply chains’’ of many products, mainly when their value cannot be completely recovered after use. In addition to environmental aspects, the process of recycling involves technical, economic, social and political challenges for public management. For most of the urban solid waste, the management of the end-of-life depend...
متن کاملA new procedure to plan routing and scheduling of vehicles for solid waste collection at a metropolitan scale
In this paper a new decision procedure for urban solid waste collection problem is introduced. The problem objective is to minimize the overall cost, which is essentially based on the time spent by the vehicles in the network. In the last years such a problem has been considered by several authors in the framework of the more general problem of planning a waste management system at a municipal ...
